A comprehensive physical education curriculum in schools has several advantages. Sports change a student personally in addition to their academic performance. Sports help people develop perseverance, teamwork, and leadership skills. In addition to enhancing pupils’ physical stamina, sports invariably instill discipline, tenacity, willpower, and obedience in them. “Nowadays, physical education is more than just performing regular physical activity; it also entails learning how to cultivate self-control, sharpen your focus, and narrow your attention in on your life's objectives. Yes, it boosts physical fitness, but it also enhances self-awareness equally,” says Anoop Singh Bishnoi, Chairman of The JDS School, Village Mehrajpur, Distt Fazilka, Punjab.
Comprehensive education is about paying equal importance to every subject in the curriculum, and that applies to physical education as well. PE is a part of the school being more than just academics; it’s about educating the full person, a holistic education that improves us overall. The quest for national sporting success starts in the classroom. It is far more difficult to select athletes to represent our nation on a larger scale if PE is not required in the classroom. In addition to helping the individual, the state wants to see a favorable return on its investment in an educated population that will support business and entrepreneurship, among other things, and sports play an equal role in that as well. Sports will fail without assistance from the school. Even if there are few extremely exceptional students at the school or even potentially talented students, they won’t know their worth without a dedicated PE class. Team activities will halt if complete classes aren’t made up. If there isn’t enough student interest in participating in sports voluntarily, PE activities will be discontinued and there won’t be any options. Why deny those gifted athletes their one chance to flourish since not everyone is academic?
“Sports cover a wide range of life decisions, including, most notably, a concern for physical fitness as well as teamwork, which should be promoted among all pupils. PE should be a part of every student’s life in addition to their other subjects; it shouldn’t be considered a substitute for academics. The quality of our children's health will be even poorer if the case is made that there is a high workload in schools therefore PE should be offered as a choice because then students will get an option and most likely won’t select PE in a setting where it is not compulsory. It is much preferable to remain to maintain a healthy lifestyle as a requirement while changing other curriculum pressures,” says Anoop.
Character development and the mutual respect necessary for success in an adult environment are aided by physical education. Playing team sports helps children develop their character and learn how to collaborate with others, which is a skill that is demanded in most professional and athletic settings. Sport instills in kids the virtues of gracious victory and defeat. It is essential to teach kids the fine line between healthy competition that motivates effort and, on the other hand, learning to accept losing when it comes to fairness and therefore respecting and enjoying sportsman spirit. Through physical education, kids can learn to appreciate and value both their own and other people’s bodies and abilities. The only way to compel all kids to value these benefits is through compulsory physical education.
